Los Angeles Chargers Quarterback Justin Herbert has been diagnosed with a plantar fascia injury to his right foot. The team announced he would be out for at least two weeks and would be wearing a boot. Once healthy, he'll slowly work his way back, and the team expects their gunslinger to be ready for the start of the season. With Herbert missing some time, what other Chargers QBs could benefit?
Easton Stick
Stick has been with LA since 2019 and is currently listed as the team's quarterback. Last year, he played in five games and threw for 1,149 yards, three touchdowns, and only one interception while completing 64% of his passes. He also added 144 yards and one score on the ground. Stick could solidify his quarterback spot and even catch the eyes of other NFL teams that are in need of Quarterback depth.
On day five of the Chargers' camp, Stick joined Herbert in wearing the golden "no contact" jersey, so clearly, the team sees value in Stick and wants him to stay healthy. Aside from one video, there aren't many reports on how Stick has performed so far in training camp, and it's not helping his case. In the video, stick under throws his receiver, resulting in rookie CB Cam Hart walking away with an interception. It's only practice and one video, so there's no need to overreact. However, it's not a great sight for Bolts fans. The real eye test will come on August 10th during the Chargers' first pre-season game, where Stick will be starting.
Max Duggan
The 2022 Heisman candidate from TCU hasn't had a chance to show the league what he's capable of yet, but with Herbert missing some time, he now has the opportunity. Last pre-season, Duggan only had 12 pass attempts, completing 50% of them and throwing for one touchdown. While we haven't seen much of Duggan in the NFL, his final season in College was very impressive. Duggan threw for 3,321 yards, 30 touchdowns, and only four interceptions while leading the Horned Frogs to the National Championship. Duggan will be QB2 for the Bolts until Herbert returns, so he'll see more action in the pre-season than he did last year. He could fight for the QB2 spot with an impressive showing in the pre-season.
Max Duggan also has some familiar faces to throw to during the pre-season as wide receivers Quentin Johnston and Derius Davis played with Duggan at TCU. Duggan commented on reuniting with his former college teammates, saying, “To reunite with Q and Derius, and we all get to be out there and be a part of a great franchise and be a part of a great team with a great coaching staff, that is going to be fun,”
