The trade deadline has come and gone, and once again, it seems to be a very underwhelming deadline for the Bronx Bombers. In what may be the only year they have Juan Soto, many assumed that Brian Cashman would make many moves to go all in on the season.
Cashman went out and acquired Jazz Chisholm a few days back but was pretty quiet once again on deadline day, acquiring a few relief pitchers. The issue is that none of the pitchers acquired are replacements for Clay Holmes or at least another option for Clay Holmes.
Once the deadline passed, the Yanks had a game to play, and their newest addition continued to provide the spark that he was brought in to do. Down 4-1 in the 6th, the Yankees needed to pick up spot starter Will Warren, who had just made his MLB debut. Jazz belted a hanging 1-1 cutter deep into the Philly night for his third home run in the past two games. The Yankees had cut the deficit to just two runs, eventually chasing starter Aaron Nola from the game.
The Phillies called on Matt Strahm to hold the lead, but after walking to Soto and Judge, Jazz dug in with one out and had a chance to do some more damage. You couldn't write a better script as he demolished a hanging slider into the right field seats to give the Yankees the lead. Even better, you can see the confidence and the swagger that he brings just by watching him strut down the line and flip his bat before taking his home run trot.
While Clay Holmes blew another save, the Yanks again pulled out an extra-inning win on the road in a hostile environment. Like many fans, I was pretty agitated when 6:00 PM came, and Cashman didn't swing a deal for Pete Fairbanks or Yandy Diaz, but maybe a player like Jazz was what this team needed all along.
With reinforcements on the way in the form of Dominguez, Hamilton, Effross, and Schmidt, added with the spark that Chisholm has provided, we could see this Yankees team go on a run heading into the postseason. What happens when they get there is a story for another day. For now, let's all sit back and enjoy some smooth Jazz.
