With the end of NFL preseason games already here and roster crunches coming, front offices are making last minute moves to better their team. According to Jordan Schultz of Bleacher Report, the Chiefs and Pro Bowl receiver Juju Smith-Schuster agreed to reunite right before the start of the 2024 season. This comes after the Patriots released Smith-Schuster earlier this month.
In his first stint with the Chiefs in 2022, Smith-Schuster played in nine games with a total of 933 yards and three touchdowns. He recorded 89 yards in the postseason, and was a part of the Super Bowl Championship team.
Last year in New England, Smith-Schuster had a bit of a down year, leading to his release before this season. While his mounting injuries and the quarterback carousel of the Patriots certainly did not help, Smith-Schuster only had 260 yards and one touchdown in seven games played. He will look to stay healthy this season, and become a reliable weapon for Patrick Mahomes.
The addition of Smith-Schuster to this seasons' Chiefs roster clears a few questions about the receiver room. One of the biggest storylines heading into this season had to do with the wide receivers. After a down year in 2023, the team added as many receivers as possible to ensure Mahomes had enough players to throw to. Adding Smith-Schuster provides depth for the Chiefs, and gives them time to evaluate their options. With questions surrounding Rashee Rice and Hollywood Brown's availability in the opener, the addition of Smith-Schuster gives the Chiefs much needed relief.
