With the start of the NFL season just around the corner, players on expiring contracts have all of the pressure on them. According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Chiefs and Pro Bowl center Creed Humphrey agreed to a four-year, $72 million extension. $50 million of that deal will be fully guaranteed and his new contract will run through the 2028 season. Humphrey will be just 29 years old when his contract is over.
Humphrey was set to enter the final year of his rookie contract before the extension took place. The two-time pro-bowler and two-time Super Bowl winner has started 51 games, which is every game possible since he was drafted in the second round of the 2021 NFL draft by the Chiefs.
Throughout his years in Kansas City, Humphrey has played a vital role in creating an offensive line to protect Patrick Mahomes. This contract only proves how important Humphrey is to the Chiefs.
Over the course of the deal, Humphrey will make around $18 million per season, which makes him the highest-paid center in history based on annual average. The previous record was held by Frank Ragnow, who made an annual average of $13.5 million.
While Mahomes' contract does keep the Chiefs from retaining their entire Super Bowl winning roster, this contract extension for Humphrey will only enable them to make it back into the championship. With Mahomes under contract until 2030, Travis Kelce until 2026, and Chris Jones until 2027, the Chiefs will look to make the most of these years.
With the Humphrey signing locked down, the Chiefs will look to extend other players from the 2021 draft, Nick Bolton and Trey Smith. While signing these players might prove to be difficult, the front office is making an effort to keep some of their best young players.
