The Green Bay Packers have acquired quarterback Malik Willis from the Tennessee Titans in exchange for a 2025 seventh-round pick. Willis will likely be the number two option behind Jordan Love after Sean Clifford and Michael Pratt failed to impress during the preseason.
Willis was drafted by Tennessee in the third round of the 2022 draft out of Liberty University to back up Ryan Tannehill and potentially be the future quarterback of the franchise. The rookie was asked to step in and lead the offense when Tannehill went down with an injury.
Willis finished the year playing in eight games and struggled by only throwing for 276 yards with no touchdowns and three interceptions. After only playing three games in 2023, Willis started to show some growth this year. He finished his preseason with the Titans, completing 20 of 27 pass attempts for 205 yards with two touchdowns and one interception.
The Packers had to make the move to protect themselves if Love had to miss a game or two. Even when Love is healthy, don't be surprised if LaFleur runs Willis out there for special play packages he's dialed up for any given situation. Learning the playbook may take some time, but overall, this is an excellent move by the Green Bay front office. By only giving up a seventh-round pick, there is little to no risk, and it fills a roster spot as they get set to make final cuts.
