One day after the New York Mets acquired Ryne Stanek in a trade with the Seattle Mariners, the New York Yankees made a trade of their own. According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, on Saturday, the Yankees are finalizing a deal to acquire outfielder/second baseman Jass Chisholm in a trade with the Miami Marlins.
The Marlins will be getting three prospects from New York in the deal. The most prominent of these is catcher Agustin Ramirez, the Yankees' 20th-ranked prospect, according to MLB.com. It is unknown who the other two prospects that New York is sending to Miami are.
Chisholm is in his fifth season with the Marlins. He has two years of team control left until he becomes a free agent in 2027. This season, he's hitting .249 with 13 home runs, 50 RBIs, 22 steals, and a .730 OPS.
It isn't known how the Yankees will use Chisholm. Chisholm has played in the outfield for most of the past two seasons. Recently, though, he has been playing second base. I would say that this was a bad trade if Chisholm was just an outfielder. The Yankees already have a lot of outfielders, with Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, Alex Verdugo, and Giancarlo Stanton, who is currently out on injury. The outfield isn't a need for the Yankees right now. However since Chisholm can play in the infield as well, I say that this is a good trade for the Yankees.
Chisholm could replace Gleyber Torres at second if Torres were to leave when he becomes a free agent at the end of the season. Torres has struggled this year but is starting to turn things around. Before the All-Star break, Torres was hitting .215 with a .628 OPS and had made 12 errors, the most by a second baseman. In the 19 games after the All-Star break Torres has raised his batting average to .237 and his OPS to .681. Chisholm would be a good replacement for Torres should Torres go. If Torres continues to turn things around and stay, then expect Chisholm to replace Verdugo who is struggling offensively, and his defense hasn't been good either.
