New York Mets Acquire Ryne Stanek from Seattle Mariners

With the trade deadline just days away, the New York Mets made a trade to help their bullpen. On Friday, the Mets acquired reliever Ryne Stanek from the Seattle Mariners for their 30th-ranked prospect, outfielder Rhylan Thomas. To make room on the roster for Stanek, the Mets designated pitcher Josh Walker for assignment.

"He's got that ability to come in late in games," Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said. "Playoff experience, big games. It's a power arm. It's 97-98 [mph] with a splitter. I've seen him a lot. I'm just glad he's on my side now."

Stanek, who will become a free agent after this season, has had a good season. In 46 appearances with the Mariners, he had a 4.38 ERA, a 1.33 WHIP, and 44 strikeouts. He also had seven saves in 11 chances.

This trade comes just two weeks after the Mets acquired reliever Phil Maton in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays. It also comes just hours after the Mets placed Dedniel Nunez, one of their best relievers, on the injured list with a right pronator strain, which is an elbow strain. Stanek will help bolster a bullpen that hasn't been good; they entered Friday with a 4.04 bullpen ERA, which puts them 17th in the majors. The bullpen also has been plagued by injuries. Five of the eight relievers on the Mets roster on Opening Day aren't on the roster currently. The good news for the Mets is that Sean Reid-Foley, Reed Garrett, and Nunez should return sometime in August.

The Stanek trade wasn't the only trade the Mets made on Friday. They also traded reliever Cole Sulser, whom they had designated for assignment last week, to the Rays for cash. Stanek and Maton will significantly help the Mets bullpen, but they might need some more help. Expect the Mets to add to their bullpen before the trade deadline.
