New York isn't going to be having any "jazz" for a while. The New York Yankees placed third baseman Jazz Chisholm on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday due to sprained left elbow. They also recalled pitcher Will Warren and infielder Oswald Peraza from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and designated pitcher Enyel De Los Santos for assignment.
Chisholm injured his elbow when he slid into home plate during Monday night's game against the Chicago White Sox. He remained in the game, after getting injured, to play third base. In the seventh inning he left the game and Ben Rice pinch-hit for him. The Yankees are still waiting for doctors to determine if Chisholm needs surgery or not.
“Obviously, he’s been really impactful for us,” Yankees manager Aaron Boone said. “It’s certainly tough to not have him in there, with what he’s meant to this team already. We’ll just do our best to support him and get him right.”
The Yankees acquired Chisholm in a trade with the Miami Marlins just before the trade deadline. He has provided a spark that the Yankees needed since joining the team. In 14 games in New York, he is hitting .316 with seven home runs and 11 RBIs. Chisholm made franchise history by becoming the first ever Yankee to hit seven home runs in his first 12 games with the team.
With Chisholm out, the question remains: Who will play third base? According to Boone, DJ LeMahieu and Oswaldo Cabrera will both get time at third base. Cabrera and Peraza are better options to play third than LeMahieu, but if LeMahieu is going to get playing time, then Peraza will just be a backup. Peraza shouldn't be a backup, he should be playing. This season in Triple-A he's hitting .244/.351/.382 with eight homers, 37 RBI and 17 steals. That performance is good enough for Peraza to get some playing time. Boone should bench LeMahieu, who has struggled this season, and have Cabrera and Peraza play third while Chisholm is out.
