Chargers Trade For Taylor Heinicke

After underwhelming performances by the Chargers QBs in the three pre-season games, the Los Angeles Chargers have traded for Falcons QB Taylor Heinicke for a conditional 6th round pick. Second-stringer Easton Stick was the only Chargers QB to play in all three games and the only one to throw a passing touchdown. He also had three interceptions and had the lowest QBR on the team. Max Duggan only played in one game and was 4/7 for 41 yards. Former XFL MVP Luis Perez played in two games and completed 18 of his 32 attempts for 139 yards.

In his five games played for the Falcons last year, Heinicke threw for 890 yards completing 54.4% of his passes. He tossed five touchdowns but also four interceptions, while also running for a score. Heinicke played one full season as a starter in 2021 for the Washington Commanders, leading them to a 7-10 record. He got benched the following season in favor of current Seahakws' QB Sam Howell. He then signed with Atlanta in free agency to battle it out with current free agent Desmond Ridder, with Ridder winning the job initially before Heinicke replaced him. Heinicke got lost in the shuffle of this current Falcons quarterback room, with Atlanta signing Kirk Cousins to be the starter and then drafting Micheal Penix Jr to be the heir apparent to Cousins one day. Heinicke will likely be QB2 with Perez not making the initial 53-man roster.
