With the MLB trade deadline just hours away, the Cincinnati Reds made a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers during the Brewers game against the Atlanta Braves, which Milwaukee won 8-3. The Brewers acquired starting pitcher Frankie Montas, while the Reds will get pitcher Jakob Junis, outfielder Joey Wiemer, and cash.
“It’s kind of nice to have somebody out there that believes in you,” Montas told reporters in Cincinnati. “I’m not saying [the Reds] don’t believe in me. That’s not a question. … The cool part is going to a team that’s in first place.”
Montas signed a one-year. $16 million deal with the Reds last winter. He has a $20 million mutual option for 2025 with a $2 million buyout. The Reds will get $1 million in this deal. In 19 starts with the Reds, Montas was 4-8 with a 5.01 ERA, a 1.44 WHIP, and 78 strikeouts.
This is the third trade that the Brewers have made for a pitcher recently. On July 3, they traded for Aaron Civale from the Tampa Bay Rays. This past Saturday, they acquired Nick Mears from the Colorado Rockies. Montas will provide some depth to the Brewers' pitching staff and help the pitching staff with lots of injuries. Starters Joe Ross and DL Hill are on the 60-day injured list, and reliever Trevor Megil was placed on the 15-day injured list on Monday. Montas started the season off well but has struggled recently. In three started since July 4 he is 0-2 with a 9.00 ERA. Hopefully Montas can turn things around, otherwise the Brewers will need to look for another pitcher. The Brewers have had a league-high 16 pitchers start for them, and if they don't want that number to go up, then they better hope that Montas gets back to his earlier season form.
