2025 Monster Energy Supercross Recap - Pittsburgh

The last time Supercross was in Pittsburgh, Three Rivers Stadium was alive and well and saw Broc Glover win a July round of Supercross, the Penguins were less than a year out from drafting some Quebec kid named Mario Lemieux (wonder how he turned out), Electric Avenue by Eddie Grant, and Every Breath You Take by the Police were topping the Billboard charts, and America was about three weeks out from getting National Lampoon's Vacation. In other words, it's been a LONG time since the Steel City has hosted a round of SX.
Nice time for a return, all things considered. Things have heated up quite a bit in the 450 and 250 East Championships with only rounds to go, and Chase Sexton, the underdog in the 450 race, continues to stay hot and qualified on top once again by a few tenths over Cooper Webb. Seth Hammaker, meanwhile, took home sole possession of the 250 East points lead last week in New Jersey, and his second-to-last race of the season is another home game for the Pennsylvania native. That said, could he do enough to give himself breathing room headed into the SLC Showdown?
Daytime Program/Injury Notes:
- For those interested in donating in helping Jerry Robin's recovery efforts, here is his Road2Recovery link, which has help raised over $140,000 as of Saturday.
- GasGas has shut down Justin Barcia for these final three rounds of Supercross.
- Tom Vialle had a rough get-off in Q2 but was good to go for the heats.
- Since it's Pittsburgh, the amount of Steelers propaganda during the broadcast and via the riders with kits sickens me to my core. What happened to the game I love??? That said, I'd be stunned if they aren't here next year, given the awesome turnout and some stadiums almost certainly coming off the schedule as they get set up to host World Cup games.
- 250 East Fastest Qualifier: No. 24 R.J. Hampshire (48.507) (Over a half second faster than anyone else)
- 450 Fastest Qualifier: No. 4 Chase Sexton (47.276)
250 Class Recap
1st - No. 1 Tom Vialle (Red Bull KTM)
Cold Blooded, Stone Cold, phrases of that nature, etc. It was an unreal ride for Vialle, who never flaked trailing Nate Thrasher and made a spectacular pair of closeout corners on the Star Yamaha rider for his first win of the year. He was getting smoked in the whoops, with Thrasher having enough speed to blitz them while going for the 2-3-4 or 3-3-3, and it didn't even matter. One more performance like that, and he's officially going back-to-back, but no matter what, he won't get the winless champion distinction like Tim Ferry.
2nd - No. 41 Nate Thrasher (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha)
There's no shame in defeat for Thrasher here, who's had as up-and-down season as it gets in 2025. Even if he was notably better in the whoops at different points than Vialle, I don't know if anyone would've been able to stop his charge to the front. If it's any consolation, he sits fourth with one race to go in the Championship now, despite three finishes of 14th or worse.
3rd - No. 92 Max Vohland (Muc-Off/FXR/ClubMX Yamaha)
What a feel-good day, heat race, and main event for Vohland, finally getting his first career podium after a horrific string of injuries over the last half-decade. He was really the first guy who was making great use of that inside-to-outside option lane last night, and let's not even forget he had a career day with a modified rear brake on the handlebars because of a foot injury. It was a very impressive ride from Max, and I hope we can see more of this come Outdoors.

450 Class Recap
1st and 2nd - No. 2 Cooper Webb (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha) and No. 4 Chase Sexton (Red Bull KTM)
I have to give Chase Sexton a ton of credit for digging deep as much as he did, but sometimes it's not your night, and it was most certainly Cooper Webb's night. He was spent post-race, but he didn't blink once for 20-something minutes and got a couple of breaks with Sexton getting held up by Dean Wilson and messing up the jump line in the whoops earlier, but this is why Webb has had the career he's had because of performances like this.
Now, a ton of pressure is off of Webb because he could finish third these last two rounds and be in the clear by two points after SLC. Of course, the No. 2 has podiumed in 11 of the last 12 rounds, and the one round he didn't was a fourth in Birmingham. Nice spot to be in if you can get it. As for Sexton, I don't know how you can hold this one against him much since he made up the gap from that initial mishap with time to spare, but there are several other races you can point to before you ever get to last night. Indianapolis and Dallas jump out right away, for instance. I wouldn't be shocked if Sexton wins out here, but he needs divine intervention at this point to prevent Webb from reaching a third title.
